Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a condition that occurs in individuals who were exposed to alcohol in the womb before they were born. It’s a range of effects that can happen in a person whose mother drank alcohol during pregnancy.
These effects can include physical, mental, behavioral, and learning disabilities that can vary in severity. It’s a lifelong condition that can affect each person differently, and there is no cure. Preventing it is as simple as avoiding alcohol during pregnancy.
In South Africa, these are the facts:
-FASD is thought to affect at least 3 million of the South African population.
-FASD is 100% preventable.
